I’m just reading a textbook, not in an actual class, but I learned some interesting things. One is that neurons fire constantly, and the rate at which they fire is what produces patterns of thought. So if it is like radio and television waves, maybe we’re constantly recording and reviewing our experiences.
Another interesting thing I didn’t know is how stimulants calm people with ADHD. (I talk more about my kids having ASD, but we have one with ADHD too.) The stimulants apparently target the prefrontal area, and so wake up executive function/judgment. It turns out executive function is also a problem for people with depression, in not containing their emotions and sometimes jumping to conclusions.
